When the First Jewish War broke out, the Jewish leadership began striking coins of its own. The symbols, inscriptions, and the very fact of their minting expressed the aim of the revolt: restoration of self-rule. Simon Bar Kokhba was the leader of what is known as the « Bar Kokhba Revolt » against the Roman Empire, dated 132 CE, while establishing an independent Jewish state. Under his rule, local coins were imprinted, which were found nearly 2000 years later and became the inspiration for modern coins. The obverse design was based on one of those ancient coins features Date tree as well as the word Israel in Hebrew, English and Arabic. In Judaism, Date tree was heavily cultivated as a food source in ancient Israel. In the Bible Date trees are referenced as symbols of prosperity and triumph. In Psalm 92:12 « The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree ». Palm branches occurred as iconography in sculpture ornamenting the Second Jewish Temple in Jerusalem, on Jewish coins, and in the sculpture of synagogues. Christians adapted the palms as a symbol of resurrection (victory over death through the union with Christ). Palm fronds were lain on the path walked by Christ as he entered Jerusalem. About Meran Shavit and his manufacturing process. My name is Meran Shavit and my passion for coins stems from my love of history and meaning. I love to work with Israeli coins as each one has a biblical symbol and significance. They are also aesthetically beautiful and unique in their design. Transforming coins into pieces of jewelry excites me for two reasons: each piece takes on a whole new meaning, and seeing someone actually wearing it gives me as much pleasure as it does the owner. I have always been interested in special and unique jewelry and a few years ago I began experimenting with making jewelry out of old coins. The road to transforming coins into jewelry was long, but I enjoyed every minute and learned all the steps involved in the process. It starts with identifying coins that are solid enough to withstand extreme pressure and high temperatures. Of these, I select only coins that commemorate special historic events (such as battles from the War of Independence), national symbols, and portraits of national heroes and admired presidents. In my studio I turn the coins into single or double band rings for men and women, medallions necklaces and bracelets, and other items that I custom-design for my clients. Please pay as soon as possible as that will allow us to post your item to you sooner. In the unlikely event that your item is damaged or lost during post, then WE are responsible.
